What is a Stock Blend (or Master Blend)?

A stock blend is a combination of essential oils created for a specific purpose, such as promoting sleep, boosting energy, purifying the air, or enhancing mood. This blend is made in larger quantities so you can have it readily available for future use. Stock blends can be added to diffusers, body lotions, or inhalers as an example.

Using a stock blend makes it convenient to add essential oils to your diffuser without having to handle individual oil bottles each time.

Steps for Creating a Stock Blend

  1. Get an Empty Bottle: Use an empty bottle with an orifice reducer (e.g., 5ml or 10ml). You can reuse your empty essential oil bottles for this purpose.

  2. Select Your Oils: Choose the oils you want to include in your blend. You can use one of your favourite blends or create a new one.

  3. Add the Oils to the Bottle: Pour the selected oils into your bottle. .

  4. Blend the Oils: Give the bottle a gentle shake to mix the oils thoroughly.

  5. Label Your Bottle: Write the name of the blend, the oils used, and the date the blend was made on the bottle.

  6. Use Your Stock Blend: Add the required number of drops of your stock blend to your diffuser. The amount needed will depend on your diffuser type and room size. Typically, 6–10 drops are recommended.

  7. Store Properly: Keep your stock blend in a cool, dark place.

  8. Shelf Life: The shelf life of your blend will be based on the oil with the shortest expiry date.

Example: Creating a Sleep Blend

Say you have a diffuser blend for sleep consisting of:

  • 4 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • 4 drops Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)

  • 2 drops Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)

To create a 5ml stock blend, which is about 100 drops, you would use:

  • 40 drops Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • 40 drops Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)

  • 20 drops Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)

Alternatively, if you prefer to measure in ml or grams, which is helpful for creating blends used in formulas worked out in percentages, you would use:

  • 2 ml Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • 2 ml Petitgrain (Citrus aurantium)

  • 1 ml Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides)
